Chisinau, 13 November /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu is upbeat about the election of Moldova s head of state, even if the Party of Communists (PCRM) boycotts the second round of the polls. Ghimpu said that the delay in the president's election is just a break in the country's democratisation. He stressed that Moldova "will plunge into a deeper crisis, if the president is not elected." Marking the ninth anniversary of death of his brother, Gheorghe Ghimpu, at the latter's grave, the acting president answered journalists' questions about the social and political situation in Moldova. Asked by MOLDPRES whether "the ace up the sleeve which will allow voting the president" is the amendment of the fundamental law, Ghimpu said that it is more difficult to amend the constitution, as it requires two thirds of the MPs' votes, and neither the referendum about which the press has been writing is the ace which he was speaking about. "You will make sure that what I say is a constitutional, legal and democratic reality," Ghimpu said. Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said that the Alliance for European Integration (AIE) does not fight against the PCRM. He said this is just "a struggle of ideas, and the one who is more convincing wins." "They should be grateful for having managed to deceive the people eight years long. But now the citizens understood that they were lying - they trust us. If we are like them, we will lose people's confidence, but I do not want to go this road," Ghimpu specified. At the same time, Mihai Ghimpu also referred to a 12 November meeting with French Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Pierre Lellouche. He said that "Lellouche warned us, on behalf of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, that we should reform the state's institutions and ensure the law's functionality. Europe will not provide help following statements or struggles between us and the Communists." "In a word, France will be with us if we walk along the democratic path of reforms, so that the citizens feel that Moldova is a democratic state based on the rule of law," Ghimpu said.
