Chisinau, 13 November /MOLDPRES/-Approximately 20 settlements on both banks of the Dniester River will be allotted three million euros to implement social infrastructure projects. The initiatives had been proposed within the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” programme financed by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Thereby, medical, educational, cultural and sports institutions will be restored in localities like Rezina, Dubasari, Chitcani, Slobozia-Dusca, Rascov and others. The programme also aims to enhance confidence between inhabitants of both banks of Dniester and back key joint activities in the social field.

Attending the event was also the head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Pirkka Tapiola. “The EU is doing its best to back joint cooperation platforms between representatives of local authorities and civil society on both banks of Dniester. It is extremely important that we encourage the development of such programmes at the local level and improve people's living standards”.

For her part, UNDP deputy resident representative in Moldova, Narine Sahakyan, said “problems on both banks of Dniester are the same; therefore, we should join our efforts to settle them. We want to speed up the implementation of the project to see fruitful results as soon as possible”.

Since 2009, the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” programme has helped Moldova implement more than 50 projects to improve its social infrastructure. Another 30 infrastructure objects are to be modernized over the next three years.
