Romania marks National Day today

Chisinau, 1 December /MOLDPRES/-Romania marks National Day today. It is a state in Southeast Europe, situated between Ukraine, Moldova, the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary.

Romania’s National Day was celebrated on 10 May in 1866-1947, then on 23 August in 1948-1989. According to the law No 10 of 31 July 1990, promulgated by President Ion Iliescu and published in Official Journal on 1 August, the day of 1 December was adopted as a national day and public holiday in Romania.

Romania is the ninth country by area (238,391 square kilometers) and the seventh in terms of population (over 20 million residents) among the EU member states. Its capital, Bucharest, is the largest city and the sixth in the EU in terms of people (1.9 million residents).

Sibiu was designed to be European Capital of Culture in 2007. Romania is a member of international organisations, among which: United Nations (since 1955), Council of Europe (1993), European Union (1 January 2007), NATO (29 March 2004), OSCE, OIF (2003), Latin Union (1980) and some economic institutions: World Bank Group, IMF (since 1972), EBRD (1991) and OECD.

The country has foreign trade with Germany, Italy, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, U.S.A., South Korea, Moldova, Russia and other countries.

Romania was the first state to recognize Moldova’s independence, just a few hours after proclamation of independence (27 August 1991). Diplomatic relations at the level of embassy were set on 29 August 1991. The Romanian Embassy was the first diplomatic representative opened by a state in the capital of Moldova (started its activity on 20 January 1992). It was led at charge d’affaires level until June 1993. First Romanian ambassador was accredited to Chisinau in June 1993. First Moldovan ambassador to Bucharest was accredited in January 1992.

Romania is the main trade partner of Moldova since 2014. The Moldovan-Romanian trade exchanges reached a 1.24 billion- dollar record level in 2014. In January-June 2015, Moldova’s foreign trade with Romania registered 501.28 million dollars, the export having a 22.36- per cent share, increasing by 10.4 per cent against the same period of 2014.
