European parliament encourages continuing reforms in Moldova

Chisinau, 5 February /MOLDPRES/- Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today met a delegation of the  European Parliament, the parliament’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The main issues were focused on the social and economic situation in Moldova, political developments, as well as implementation of reforms assumed as associated country with EU.

Candu said that the political, economic and social challenges faced by Moldova at present could be overcome through deep structural reforms, especially in justice, financial and banking sectors and fighting corruption.

“By urgently implementing these reforms, the government, backed by the parliament, must regain citizens’ trust. EU should provide support to Moldova according to the “more for more” principle – more reforms implemented by Moldova, more support on behalf of EU”, Andrian Candu said.

Other subects discussed at the meeting were related to the provisions of “integrity package” approved by the government, “energy package”, the new law on prosecution, current stage of investigating the bank fraud by Kroll company. At the same time, the speaker noted that the government’s priority was meeting all conditions for the negotiation of a new programme with the International Monetary Fund.

MEPs encouraged Moldova to continue reforms, including by implementing the provisions of the Association Agreement and ensuring economic stability, which would transform the country into a successful partner and would get it closer to EU.

A delegation of the European Parliament pays a working visit to Moldova on 4-6 February. It is made up of MEPs Heido Hautala, co-chair of EURONEST Parliamentary Assembly, co-chairwoman of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance, Rebecca Harms and EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee member Peter Eriksson. The lawmakers will hold a string of discussions with representatives of parliamentary factions.
