Chisinau, 5 May /MOLDPRES/- The cabinet approved a draft law on youth on 4 May. The document will promote the interests of young people in the public policies and will create a viable mechanism for their support, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The law on youth has not been updated since 1999. Filip government considered that it was necessary to adopt a more ample document and adjusted to the realities and needs of young people.

Under the draft, the young people’s age limit will be between 14-35 years. Presently, it is between 16-30 years. Thus, broader participation of young people in the extra-curricular activities, including of those from rural area, and involvement in the national and international economic programmes will be ensured.

At the same time, the new legislative regulations recommend the local public authorities to involve the young people and youth organizations in elaborating and implementing youth policies.

The new draft law also sees recognition of other informal youth structures, such as: initiative groups, student senates, youth organizations of political parties.

According to official data, over 870,900 young people are in Moldova, out of whom 58.6 per cent live in village and 41.4 per cent in town.
