Moldova government supports punishment for aggressive driving

Chisinau, 14 September /MOLDPRES/ – The cabinet of ministers, at its meeting today, supported a group of MPs initiative to legislate acts representing aggressive behaviour in road traffic and setting penalties for them, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The draft legislative amendment describes as aggressive behaviour maneuvers in road traffic which unreasonably create obstacles and harm the rights of other road users. At the same time, drivers are advised to adopt a safe driving, which involves not allowing dangerous situations while driving, anticipating and avoiding dangerous situations which can be caused by other road users.

Depending on the recorded infringements' gravity, drivers will be punished with fines, penalty points or community service. The amendments are to be made to the law on road traffic safety and Contravention Code of Moldova.

Also, the Government came up with a string of recommendations to improve the legislative initiative and comply it with the regulations in force and good practices in the field.

According to statistics, over 90 per cent of accidents are caused by drivers, with main causes being speeding and failure to adapt the speed to traffic, not granting priority at road crossings or crossing pedestrian crossings and driving a car under the influence of alcohol or other banned substances.
