Moldovan electoral body accepts request for withdrawal of candidate Andrei Nastase from presidential race

Chisinau, 21 October /MOLDPRES/- The Central Election Commission (CEC) today accepted the application on withdrawal from the presidential race of candidate of the Dignity and Truth Platform Party (PPDA) Andrei Nastase upon his request.
The head of the CEC’s press service, Rodica Sirbu, confirmed the information on the matter. “After the commission accepted the request for withdrawal of Nastase, CEC is going to modify the order of electoral contenders in the ballot paper,” Sirbu said.
The decision to leave the electoral race was taken after PPDA and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) decided to back candidate of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) Maia Sandu at the presidential elections. Also, CEC admitted to modify the electoral symbol of common candidate Maia Sandu, which will be “Yes Maia Sandu”.
Direct presidential elections will take place in Moldova on 30 October 2016. CEC has recorded 12 candidates for the Moldovan president post: Marian Lupu – on behalf of the Democratic Party, Mihai Ghimpu – Liberal Party, Iurie Leanca – European People’s Party of Moldova, Andrei Nastase – Dignity and Truth Political Party, Ina Popenco – Ravnopravie (Equality of Rights), Dumitru Ciubasenco – Our Party, Maia Sandu – Action and Solidarity Party and Igor Dodon – Party of Socialists, Silvia Radu – independent candidate, Maia Laguta – independent candidate, Ana Gutu – Right Party and Valeriu Ghiletchi – an independent candidate.
