Romanian foreign minister says relation with Moldova remains major priority of Romania's foreign policy

Chisinau, 23 January /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Galbur today paid a working visit to Bucharest, at an invitation by Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication service has reported.    

During the visit, the two ministers made an assessment of the present stage and prospects for the bilateral relations. The sides reiterated the mutual interest in the continuous development of cooperation in all sectors, in the spirit of the bilateral Strategic Partnership for Moldova’s European Integration.  

Minister Teodor Melescanu stressed that the relation with Moldova remained a major priority of Romania’s foreign policy. He reconfirmed Romania’s firm will to further back the European integration and the reform processes promoted by Moldova, in line with the Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Moldova and the European Union, the goal of which is to meet the aspirations of prosperity and security of all Moldovan citizens.

Minister Andrei Galbur reiterated the Moldovan government’s firm will to fully carry out its European agenda of reforms and modernization of the society and thanked the Romanian government for the support provided Moldova to promote its development programmes, including by implementing projects on infrastructure and on backing the residents.   

The two officials agreed on resuming the meetings of the Romania-Moldova joint inter-governmental commission for European integration and on holding the next meeting in Chisinau in the first half of 2017.  

The two ministers also spoke out for the organization, in next spring, of a meeting of the Group for the European Action of Moldova in Brussels, during which a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Moldova’s European integration is to be carried out.

The sides also exchanged opinions on the Transnistrian conflict settlement process. The two ministers declared for continuing efforts to identify a political solution within the five-plus-two negotiations, by observing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and adoption of a special status for the Transnistrian region.   

In the end, Ministers Teodor Melescanu and Andrei Galbur said the bilateral Strategic Partnership should be further strengthened.
