Chisinau, 30 March /MOLDPRES/- The law on ratification of the Council of Europe Convention against trafficking in human organs will be published in the Official Journal of Moldova on 31 March.

The document was signed by Moldova in March 2015, along with other 47 countries, and stipulates combating trafficking in human organs, including tissue and cells.

Also, the Convention aims at protecting victims’ rights, facilitating cooperation at national and international levels in actions against trafficking in human organs.

The documents sees that the human organ trafficking is a problem of global proportions, which violates human rights, and is a serious threat to public health. It is often related to transnational organized crime, profiting from the vulnerable situation of donors, and occurs in the context of the inability of countries to meet the needs of transplant of patients.

The World Health Organisation estimates that about 10,000 transplantations are performed on the black market each year.
