Chisinau, 30 July /MOLDPRES/ – The civil society representatives and opposition parties participated in a new protest, in front of the Legislature, against the modification of the electoral system, today.

The protest was supported by several political parties – the Platform of Dignity and Truth Party (PPDA), Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM), Partidul Nostru (Our Party), Party Casa Noastra Moldova (Our Home Moldova) (PCNM) and Party of National Unity (PUN). More political leaders and civic activists spoke to the protesters and put forward arguments against the mixed voting system.

"The electoral system was modified so that those in power remain in the leadership after the parliamentary elections. We see that the law and the Constitution are being violated on a daily basis, which is why we have to prove that we do not let ourselves trample on our feet. Our voice must be heard," said PAS’s leader, Maia Sandu.

"Today we are so many and we all came here with a thought that what is happening is a violation of human rights. We must not give up and go ahead, because we need changes and integral people in Moldova's leadership. Our protests must continue," said PPDA’s head, Andrei Nastase.

The protesters voted a resolution which was announced to be submitted to Speaker, Andrian Candu, the Venice Commission, embassies accredited to Moldova and Council of Europe, at the action end. The petition contains the civil society and protestors’ arguments against the electoral system modification.

The Parliament adopted on 20 July 2017, in final reading, the draft law on the  electoral system’s modification. There voted 74 MPs for a mixed voting system. The document stipulates that 51 MPs will be elected on party lists, while 50 on the basis of the uninominal vote. The draft was modified in line with the Venice Commission proposals and was subject to several public debates.
