Moldova ranks fifth world position with fastest growing number of tourists

Chisinau, 25 August /MOLDPRES/ – The Tourism Agency reports that, according to the World Tourism Organization (WTO) estimates for 2016, Moldova ranks the 5th in the world with the fastest growing number of tourists – 28.6 per cent.

According to statistical data, about 121,000 tourists chose Moldova as a holiday destination in 2016 compared to 94,000 in 2015.

The WTO experts note that Moldova is distinguished by the variety of natural and anthropogenic tourism potential, splendid nature and its impressive tourist objectives, among which is Orheiul Vechi – a monastic cave complex, which dates back more than 2,000 years, the capital – Chisinau municipality, with its green boulevards and underground wineries.

A high increase of tourists visiting Moldova was recorded in the first half of 2017. The data from the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS) reveals that in January-June 2017, the tourists' collective accommodation facilities were attended by 64.7 thousand foreign tourists, up 18.5 per cent as compared to the same period of 2016.

The most significant weight in the total number of foreign tourists accommodated in the collective tourist accommodation structures was attributed to tourists from Romania (24.1 per cent), Ukraine (13.3 per cent), Russian Federation (9.0 per cent), United States (4.7 per cent), Germany (4.4 per cent), Italy (4.1 per cent), Poland (2.7 per cent), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (2.6 per cent), France and Israel (2.1 per cent).
