Moldovan PM, Estonian president discuss bilateral ties

Chisinau, 21 September /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip had a meeting with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid in New York today. The discussions were focused on prospects for developing the political dialogue between the two states, with emphasis put on the importance to maintain an efficient exchange of opinions on up-to-date issues on the agenda of the bilateral relations, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

The prime minister thanked the Estonian side for the constant support provided for the European integration of Moldova. Filip underlined that the Moldovan authorities further relied on support to achieve their goals, including in the context of Estonia taking over the presidency of the EU Council. The PM stressed the importance of exchanging experience in fields of common interest, aimed at achieving concrete results for the benefit of the citizens.   

At the same time, the officials discussed the latest developments in the Transnistrian conflict settlement. Prime Minister Filip asked for Estonia’s support to include the issue on the withdrawal of the foreign troops from Moldova on the agenda of the UN session. In the context, the PM highlighted the artificial character of this conflict, which has not at its basis ethnic, religious or other kinds of differences. Filip specified that, at present, decision-makers discuss the settlement of economic problems of citizens from the region, among which: including the transport from the region in the international traffic, apostilling diplomas and other important issues.   

For her part, Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid confirmed her willingness to back Moldova in terms of the withdrawal of the foreign troops from the country’s territory. At the same time, the Estonian official reiterated every support for Moldova’s European integration, stressing that the country continues to be among the priority states benefiting from assistance, within the Estonian government’s programme on developing cooperation.  

The sides also emphasized the importance to carry out projects on Moldova’s inter-connection to the European system, which are extremely important to ensure the country’s energy security.
