Ukraine takes over chairmanship of Organization for Democracy and Economic Development from Moldova

Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova today transmitted to Ukraine, according to the rotation principle, the chairmanship of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM). The event took place at the meeting of the GUAM council of foreign affairs ministers, held in Milan, Italy, on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the national diplomacies of the OSCE member states, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service has reported.  

Referring to the carrying out of the actions established in the programme of Moldova’s chairmanship at GUAM for 2018, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi, who led the meeting, said that, during this year, a string of actions had been implemented, which allowed achieving mutually advantageous goals both for the member states and the regions they belong to, new partnerships of cooperation had been established in the political, economic, cultural, social sectors, etc.    

Among the achievements of Moldova’s chairmanship at GUAM, the minister mentioned the meeting of the prime ministers of the member states in Chisinau in last October. The participants in the that event agreed on more subjects with practical impact on the cooperation between the member states, as well as for the economic agents and ordinary citizens, organization of the 11th meeting of the GUAM Parliamentary Assembly; Ulianovschi also mentioned a meeting of the heads of consular services of the foreign affairs ministries, as well as a string of joint actions of the diplomatic missions of the member countries in the capitals of accreditation and within international organizations. “I am sure that the tradition liked by GUAM of edifying consensus, based on the good will of its members, will allow the Organization successfully continuing the advancement towards a mutually advantageous cooperation regionally and internationally,” Tudor Ulianovschi stressed.    

The participants in the meeting highly appreciated the cooperation in the format GUAM + Japan and hailed the first round, organized by the chairmanship of Moldova in cooperation with the GUAM Secretariat, of the GUAM + Canada format.   

In the end of the meeting, the GUAM council of foreign affairs ministers approved a decision to transmit the chairmanship for the next year to Ukraine. Minister Tudor Ulianovschi wished success to the Ukrainian colleagues, expressing confidence that the Organization would continue the way of strengthening the cooperation for the good of the member countries and their citizens.
