Chisinau, 11 September /MOLDPRES/ - The harvesting of grapes is in full swing in Moldova. The weather conditions from the 2019 agricultural year made the process start by 12-15 days earlier against 2017 and, depending on the region, on average, by one week later than in 2018; yet, on the whole, a good harvest of grapes is expected in Moldova, sources of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM) have reported.

For vine, the weather conditions from the 2018-2019 year were relatively friendly, except for some settlements, were a deficit of humidity or excess of humidity were recorded, as well as precipitation with hail, which destroyed plantations. The thermal regime of the air/soil from this year favoured the speeding up of the evolution of phases of vine’s development. As a result, the harvesting of grapes in 2019 started earlier than in 2017, but by 2-5 days later than in 2018. Traditionally, the first to begin the harvesting were producers from southern Moldova.

At the same time, specialists of the competent ministries said that the phyto-sanitary state of grapes in the phase of ripening was excellent. “The raw material is characterized by a good carrying of the process of accumulation of sugar, colouring and aromatic substances. Nevertheless, each variety has its calendar or the reaching of the phenolic maturity, for instance, for the Fetească Neagră reference variety, is scheduled for the period 10-20 September,” MADRM experts said.

The area of vine plantations in all categories of farms is about 130,000 hectares in 2019 (133,000 hectares in 2018) and the area of vine plantations in the farms for production and goods is of about 82.5 thousand hectares (82,000 hectares in 2018).

This year, an overall production of grapes estimated at 700,000 tons is forecast in Moldova, against 730,000 tons in 2018. The forecast of the overall production of grapes in the farms for production and goods is of 460,000 tons, against 445,000 tons in 2018. At the same time, about 330,000 tons of grapes available for processing are expected in 2019, against 356,000 tons in 2018.

In the 2018-2019 vine and wine year, Moldova exported 14.1 million decalitres of wine, of which 4.24 million decalitres or 56,716,904 represents bottled wine and 9.82 million decalitres - bulk wine.

The value of the exported bottled wine was 1.376 billion lei, almost equivalent to the value from 2018, while the cost of the bulk wine exported slightly decreased by– 0.976 billion lei (-3.6 per cent). The overall value of the wine exported stood at 2.352 billion lei, by almost two per cent less against the last year.

Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, China and Russia remain the principal sales markets for the bottled wine from Moldova. According to MADRM, last year, Moldova increased the volume of exported bottled wine to the USA (+11 per cent), Czech Republic (+8 per cent), Romania (+5.8 per cent), Ukraine (+3.7 per cent); it remained constant in China and Latvia and dropped in Kazakhstan (-30 per cent), Russia (- 16.9 per cent), Canada (-11.8 per cent), Poland (-5 per cent).
