Moldova goes up two positions in ranking of most competitive countries worldwide

Chisinau, 10 October /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has gone up two positions in a ranking of the most competitive countries of the world, worked out by the World Economic Forum (WEF), ranking 86th out of those 141 economies analyzed, after the country went up by one position in 2018, according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2019, launched at the world level on 9 October.  

With a score of 56.7, the maximum value of the occupant of the first position in the ranking being of 84.8 points, against 55.5 points in 2018, Moldova improved its performance, despite the impressive evolution from 2017 and respectively, of the high degree of comparison, when it went up 11 positions. The Moldovan economy is placed in the ranking immediately after Argentina, Sri Lanka and Ukraine and outruns Tunisia, Lebanon and Algeria.   

Under the WEF study, Moldova is outrun by the countries of the region, Ukraine and Romania, which ranked 85th and 51st, respectively. Before Moldova, there are member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States CIS), such as Russia (43), which maintained its position from 2018, Kazakhstan (55), Azerbaijan (58), Georgia (74), Armenia (69). Yet, even if these countries are above Moldova in the ranking, the performance of some of them has worsened against 2017. Thus, Georgia dropped eight positions, while Azerbaijan recorded a leap by 11 positions in the ranking. The economies of some countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, which is on 96th position and Tajikistan, ranking 104th, down by two positions against the year before, are less competitive.        

According to the value registered at those 12 “pillars”, taking into account at the ranking’s elaboration, Moldova’s position was negatively influenced by the variables determined by the financial system, the 124th position, market dimension (127) and stability (130).

Moldova recorded a better score in terms of technological education, meritocracy and stimulation, assets market’s efficiency, human capital, education and infrastructure.   

Singapore is on the top of the most competitive states of the world. In the ranking, this country outran the United States, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Switzerland,  Japan, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom.      

According to the WEF methodology, the Global Competitiveness Index is calculated based on 110 indicators, distributed in 12 groups, on a scale of ten points and is annually worked out on the basis of open information, as well as taking into consideration the opinions of thousands of experts from over 100 countries.
