Almost 5,000 policemen to ensure public order in Moldova on day of elections

Chisinau, 18 October /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 4,789 Interior Ministry (MAI) employees will get involved in the process of ensuring public order on the day of the local elections – 20 October.

The deputy head of the security and public order general department of the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), Veaceslav Balan, told a today’s news conference that the police had taken all needed measures to ensure order at the ballot. Thus, policemen will have the task to ensure security nearby the polling stations and to maintain the public order.  

About 3,860 police employees will get involved to guard the polling stations and over 280 will be members of monitoring groups. The law-enforcers will also react to eventual notifications received from citizens. Also, a reserve strength was established to act in emergency situations.   

Policemen demand that the electoral contenders and their supporters notify the authorities in cases of infringements. At the same time, in order not to allow infringements of the legislation on the day of the polls, the police recommend that the citizens do not enter polling stations with fire-arms or side arms, do not destroy electoral lists or posters, do not take ballot papers out of the polling station.   

The IGP representative noted that, till today, policemen had recorded more infringements of the electoral legislation and opened a criminal file for corrupting voters.

The Moldovan citizens with right to vote on 20 October are expected to come to polling stations to elect their mayors. Also on next Sunday, the residents of the uninominal electoral districts No 17, 33, 48 and 50 will elect their representatives to parliament.
