Chisinau, May 1 /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova State University (USM) and Technical University of Moldova (UTM) could merge. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Council of Rectors. Attending the event, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that such a consolidation transforms the image of the university sector.

The initiative to unite the efforts of the two universities came from the institutions' rectors, who argued the decision by the need to strengthen the educational sector and be more competitive both within the country and internationally.

"Given the situation that everyone knows, it is no secret the demographic situation, potential students, regional trends, including the fact that for a university to attract students, it must have a high reputation, international visibility. To attract international students requires resources and capacity. In this context, we are discussing with Rector Sarov, as an idea, why not initiate a merger process, but not by absorption, but a merger as between two friendly universities. We have been working together for many years and we complement each other. This would form a comprehensive university that would be much more resilient, including to fluctuations in the labour market, to various challenges and crises," said UTM rector Viorel Bostan.

USM rector Igor Sarov said that the UTM trend to become a comprehensive university is understandable. "The figures that have been presented show us a dramatic decrease in the number of students we have and then the two rectors start from a perspective where we are not interested in the position of rector, but to build the idea and demonstrate that this will be beneficial for people, for the teams we lead. We have to discuss and set certain visions," said Igor Sarov.

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun said "in the last ten years we have had a dramatic decrease in the number of students in Moldova".

The possibility of merging the two institutions is to be discussed within the university community.
