14:34 | 01.05.2024 Category: Social

Chisinau, May 1 /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova is marking International Workers' Day today, along with several countries around the world.

This is a day off for employees in several sectors. Thus, people take advantage of the time off to rest and spend the day with family and friends.

Among the countries celebrating it are Belgium, Canada, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Spain, Turkey and others.

In 1889, the Congress of the Socialist International decreed 1 May as International Labour Day, in memory of the victims of the 1886 Chicago (USA) general strike, and the day is commemorated by workers' events. Over time, 1 May became the holiday of labour movements in most countries of the world, with demonstrations gaining scale as the authorities agreed with trade unions that it should be day off.
