Chisinau, May 3 /MOLDPRES/ - A photo exhibition on the 20th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the European Union was inaugurated today at Europe Café in Chisinau. The exhibition includes 10 banners. The event was organized by the Embassy of Slovakia in the Republic of Moldova.

The event was attended by Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Moldova Pavol Ivan, State Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Carolina Perebinos, representatives of the diplomatic staff accredited to Chisinau.

In his speech, Pavol Ivan said that Slovakia's accession to the European Union was the culmination of efforts to join the family of advanced states promoting the principles of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. In the referendum of May 2003, Slovak citizens affirmed their values and expressed their desire to integrate into the democratic world. An impressive 92% of Slovakia's population - more than two million citizens - voted in favour of EU membership, making Slovakia a member of the EU on 1 May 2004.

The diplomat said that Slovakia has made a significant contribution to the European Union in the 20 years since accession. Through its active participation in political decision-making processes, its political and diplomatic know-how, especially in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe regions, has brought significant benefits to the EU.

Carolina Perebinos said that the exhibition also reflects the benefits of Slovakia's accession to the EU.

The exhibition will be open until 14 May.
