Chisinau, 26 February /MOLDPRES/-Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin resigned. An announcement to this effect was made during the parliament’s meeting today.

According to Gurin, the decision was taken after the parliament adopted the new prosecution law.

“I want to thank the parliament for voting the prosecution law, as it sets the beginning of a new decisive chapter for this institution. The law sees that the prosecutor’s mandate expires in April 2018. However, I decided to come in front of the parliament and submit my mandate. I resign starting with 1 March,” Gurin said.

“Systematic changes will follow in order to reform the system. The new general prosecutor will be selected by the Superior Council of Prosecutors through public competition, which should bring together the best experts in the field, able to commit to implement the reform,” Gurin noted.

Corneliu Gurin was appointed as Moldovan prosecutor general in April 2013.

Previously, he worked as a lawyer and was the main advisor in the legal department of the parliament’s apparatus in 1995-2001. Gurin was appointed as the director general of the parliament’s apparatus and was also the speaker’s advisor for legal problems and relations with law-enforcement bodies in 2001-2005.

Gurin was a programme coordinator/lawyer at ADEPT Civil Association as well as in other international projects in 2005-2012.
