Chisinau, 12 March /MOLDPRES/-The leadership of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri) and representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) held a meeting on 11 March. The sides discussed the troublesome restoration of Comrat-Ciumai road.

According to Gagauz Governor Irina Vlah, the restoration project of Comrat-Ciumai road is developing slowly and causes difficulties for Gagauz authorities. “Procrastinated repairing works, which started in 2012, case a lot of car accidents on this road segments,” Vlah said.

For her part, director of EBRD Representative Office in Moldova Julia Otto said her institution was interested in carrying out one of the widest reconstruction road projects in Moldova, “however, some of the Moldovan authorities in charge do not always fulfill working conditions”.

“We submitted a string of conditions when signing the decision to finance the project. The Transports and Road Infrastructure Ministry does not always obey them. We are only responsible for financing the project. We cannot assess the quality of the repaired roads,” Otto emphasized.

In this context, the EBRD official assured that the bank would “examine possibilities to solve the situation and focus on the organisation of tenders and selection of entrepreneurs”.

The restoration of the 55-kilometer Comrat-Ciumai road segment is part of the national Chisinau-Giurgiulesti road restoration project. EBRD granted allotted 25 million euros to this effect. According to the project’s working plan, the road segment should have been put into use in late 2014.
