Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ - Permanent Representative of Moldova to the United Nations Victor Moraru has recently sent a letter to UN asking for the 72nd session of the General Assembly to be included on the agenda, as well as the withdrawal of foreign military troops from Moldova.

According to the international press, in the letter the diplomat asked that the issue be discussed separately. “The Moldovan government, in line with the Article No11 of the Statute of the United Nations, calls for the inclusion of the issue related to definitive withdrawal of the international military troops from Transnistria on the agenda for the 72nd session of the General Assembly,” the letter reads.

Moraru also asked for continued efforts to complete the process of “unconditional, orderly and definitive withdrawal of the foreign military troops from the territory”. He quoted a passage from the declaration of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation of Europe, adopted in 1999, welcoming “Russia’s obligation to complete the withdrawal of its troops from Moldova till 2002”.

In late July, the parliament adopted a declaration calling for withdrawal of the Russian military troops and munitions from the country. In the statement, the MPs note that “presence of foreign troops and equipment in our country is unconstitutional and a threat to state security”.

The Constitutional Court approved in May a decision according to which “deployment on the territory of Moldova of troops and military bases, directed and controlled by foreign states, is unconstitutional”.

The Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s press service requested sending of an official letter to which it will answer within the deadline specified in the law.
