Moldovan speaker laid flowers in memory of victims of 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks

Chisinau, 11 September /MOLDPRES/- In the morning, at the US Embassy in Chisinau, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu laid flowers and lit a candle in memory of the victims of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Pentagon, Washington, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The speaker expressed solidarity with the American people and noted that after this tragic event, the global fight against terrorism began. “Today, as in 2001, the Moldovan authorities are alongside the United States of America, commemorating the memory of those who have suffered”.

For his part, US Ambassador to Moldova James Pettit appreciated the speaker’s gesture and said it is very important for his country that partners such as Moldova support the fight against extremism.

On the morning of 11 September 2001, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners. The terrorists took control of the planes, crashing two of them in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, killing all people on board and many other people working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours. The third plane collapsed in the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia, new Washington D.C. Fourth – in the rural area of Pennsylvania. There were no survivors of the flights, and about 3,000 people died after the attacks.
