One third of Moldovans believe EU helps Moldova most of all

Chisinau, 03 October /MOLDPRES/ – The citizens view the EU as major development partner. One third of Moldovans accept that the European Union is the most helpful to the country, but affirms that if Moldova is under threat, the Russian Federation will help mostly, according to the People Watch survey, conducted by CBS – AXA by order of IDIS Institute "Viitorul".

According to the research released on 03 October, 34.6 per cent of respondents believe that the EU "helps Moldova the most", followed by the Russian Federation – 29.2 per cent, Romania – 25.8 per cent, the United States of America – 10.9 per cent. The Eurasian Union – 2.9 per cent, holding the ninth position.

The survey in May 2017 indicated that 52 per cent of respondents said the EU supported Moldova the most financially, followed by Romania – 23 per cent, Russia – 17 per cent and the USA – 12.1 per cent.

Interviewed by the question: "If Moldova is under threat, which country do you think will help most of all?" – 20.1 per cent of the respondents said that the Russian Federation, 14.8 per cent – the EU and 11 per cent – Romania. But the number of those who did not answer or mentioned "do not know" is surprisingly high – 37.7 per cent.  

The Russian Federation is regarded as the main strategic partner of Moldova by 42.4 per cent of the survey participants, the EU – 35.7 per cent, Romania – 26.9 per cent, and the USA and Ukraine – 12.7 per cent. And only one in ten respondents would like to see the Eurasian Union among the strategic partners.

The respondents stick to the idea that a strategic partnership with other countries, which would serve the interests of Moldova, should include a treaty of friendship and non – aggression, unconditional support in case of external danger, respect for independence and sovereignty, development assistance and advantageous trade. Also, there are the issues, like: mutual beneficial political partnership, cultural aspirations, common educational and strategic investments.

The poll was conducted on 09 – 20 September by representative of 1,109 interviewed, with an error margin +/- 2.8 per cent.
