Moldovan PM demands taking measures to eliminate cases of sexual abuse against minors

Chisinau, 04 October /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister Pavel Filip drew the attention, at the beginning of the Cabinet meeting, to the topic of sexual abuse of minors, a topic discussed at the parliamentary commission meeting today. Especially, the Prime Minister referred to mass media headlines, as in the second half of 2017, about 25 children were sexually abused in schools in Moldova, which is not true, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

In this context, the Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Monica Babuc, said that some media sources misinterpreted the discussions in the parliamentary commission, saying that figure has represented an average of suspicious cases that occurred in the family, community or school in the recent six months of 2017. Also, Monica Babuc noted that situations of sexual abuse of minors are monitored through the mechanism of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, Ministry of Health, Social Protection and Family, as well as the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the situation would be communicated in a joint briefing of the responsible institutions.

In conclusion, Premier Pavel Filip asked the line ministries to clarify the situation and communicate the undertaken measures. "It is a problem and it is a big issue, so by mutual agreement with other responsible institutions we have to do our best to eliminate this phenomenon in general," said Pavel Filip.
