Moldovan deputy finance minister, detained for corruption, suspended from office

Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ – Deputy Minister of Finance, Maria Caraus, detained for passive and active corruption, was suspended from office. The decision was approved at the Government’s meeting today.

According to the ruling, Caraus was suspended from office at the request of prosecutors during the investigation.

Maria Caraus and three businessmen were detained in early October by anticorruption officers and prosecutors after trying to topple more public auctions. Currently, they are being investigated for passive and active corruption. The Deputy Minister and two businessmen were placed in custody for 30 days, and the fourth accused in the case was released because he decided to collaborate with the investigation.

If they are found guilty, both the civil servant and the businessmen detained within the case, risk up to 15 years in prison with a fine of up to MDL 500,000.
