Moldovan parliament speaker meets Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ – The Parliament will adopt a calendar of parliamentary hearings planned for the autumn session of 2017. The MPs will assess the impact of the legislative package adopted by Parliament and results of ongoing reforms, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The announcement was made at the meeting of Parliament Speaker, Andrian Candu, with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks, paying a visit to Moldova.

At the initiative of the Parliament Speaker, the Legal, Appointments and Immunities Commission will hold public hearings on the new Regulation on the way in which judgments are published on the national webpage of courts, approved by the Superior Council of Magistracy on 10 October 2017. Andrian Candu said that if the hearings would show that the document to need improvement, then it would be sent to the Venice Commission for expertise. Speaker Andrian Candu mentioned that the governance priorities were aimed not only at economic and social reforms, but also on respect for human rights.

At his part, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Nils Muižnieks, encouraged continued efforts to respect human rights in Moldova.

In this context, Andrian Candu reviewed significant issues of legislation passed by Parliament coming to give citizens more guarantees of respect for rights. Those are laws on the reform of the Prosecutor's Office, integrity package and the financial – banking package, as well as completion of the Constitution with a new chapter regulating the activity of the Ombudsman.

Similarly, the Speaker referred to Parliament's legislative amendments to ensure equal opportunities and preventing, eliminating discrimination: introducing a mandatory 40 per cent quota for women in public and political life, sanctions for domestic violence, stimulating measures, including financial, to ensure gender equality within electoral process. Andrian Candu added that the members of the working group with the People's Assembly of Gagauzia cared not only to improve the legislation in the field, but also respect the rights of the national minorities.
