Sweden reconfirms support for Moldova in European integration

Chisinau, 31 October /MOLDPRES/ – The Kingdom of Sweden reconfirms its support for Moldova within European integration process. The statement was made today at the meeting of Parliament Speaker, Andrian Candu, with the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden.

According to the parliament’s communication and public relations department, Andrian Candu said that Moldova has been grateful to Sweden for the support offered over the years by financing several projects with a visible impact on the citizens. According to the Speaker, Parliament has benefited from several projects supported by Sweden in recent years. This is about organizing the gender audit in Parliament for the first time and, on the basis of its recommendations, an action plan, developing a Communication Strategy for Parliament for 2017 – 2020, the Identity Guide and the Integrated Information Space of the Legislature.

Andrian Candu spoke to Swedish lawmakers about the political and economic developments in Moldova, legislative priorities for the current session, changes to legislation and exercise of parliamentary control, situation regarding respect for human rights, involvement of women in politics, etc.

Also today, the representatives of the parliamentary factions had a meeting with the delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden. The participants were: Valentina Buliga, Valeriu Ghiletchi, Alina Zotea and Tudor Deliu. The lawmakers thanked Sweden for the support given to Moldova in achieving the goal of European integration, as well as financing a number of projects meant to help Moldova in its development.

Sweden is one of the main development partners and among top 5 donors of Moldova, funding a series of important projects in areas such as market development and economic integration of Moldova into the EU, strengthening democracy, protecting human rights and environment protection. In 2016, Sweden provided assistance to Moldova of almost €10.2 million. At present, Parliament benefits from the UNDP Project "Strengthening Parliamentary Governance in Moldova", implemented with the financial support of the Government of Sweden and planned for July 2016 – December 2019.

The Delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Swedish Parliament is paying a visit to Moldova on 30 October – 01 November 2017. According to the agenda, during the day, the Swedish lawmakers met with MPs, the National Security Commission, Defence and Public Order and the Friendship Group with the Kingdom of Sweden.
