Bust to departed Moldovan culture minister to be built in eastern town of Moldova

Chisinau, 1 November /MOLDPRES/ - A bust to former Moldovan culture minister, actor Ion Ungureanu will be made in the eastern Causeni town, under a today’s cabinet decision.    

According to an informative note attached to the draft, the bust is set to be built to eternize the memory of Ion Ungureanu, actor, stage manager, former lawmaker in Moldova’s parliament, minister of culture and cults in 1990-1994.

The spending for working out the project documentation, construction of the bust, arranging the adjacent land will be covered with financial means of the Causeni district council.

Ion Ungureanu was born in the Opaci village, Causeni district, on 2 August 1935. In 1960, Ungureanu graduated from the Moscow-based Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute. He was one of the founders of the Luceafarul Theatre from Chisinau and director in the golden period of this institution, which promoted the national language and culture, actors, dramatists, composers and fine artists of Moldova. Accused of “nationalism”, Ion Ungureanu had to leave Chisinau for Moscow. He returned to Chisinau in the years of national revival; Ungureanu was lawmaker in the first parliament and the man who read the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova on the Great National Assembly Square on 27 August 1991.      

The actor was awarded the title of merited Master of Arts of the Soviet Union (1981), People’s Artist of the Moldovan Soviet Republic (1989), the Intervidenie Prize for the TV film Lika (Bulgaria 1981) and the National Prize (1990). Ungureanu was awarded the Meritul Civic (Civic Merit) Medal (1996) and the Order of the Republic (2012).     

Ion Ungureanu died on 28 January 2017.
