Chisinau, 16 December /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu regrets the refusal by President Igor Dodon to declare national mourning day in Moldova, in the memory of His Majesty King Michael I of Romania, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

“I regret that the president did not take into account my request to declare national mourning day, in order to respect a tradition which exists in the relation with Romania and taking into consideration our historical past. I regret the attitude of President Dodon, who marks some historical days from our past related to the USSR, but does not take into account also other historical moments, which belong to us, those who live on this territory,” the parliament speaker said.

Andrian Candu said that he would be in mourning today, as a token of deep respect for His Majesty King Michael.

“I welcome the fact that certain communities ruled to be in mourning. Such initiatives prove the presence of the patriotic and civic spirit among people,” Andrian Candu said.

Under the legal provisions, only the Moldovan president can declare national mourning days.

On 14 December, Andrian Candu submitted to the presidency a request to declare 16 December national mourning day.

This week, a delegation of Moldova’s parliament, led by Parliament Speaker   Andrian Candu, paid the last respects to His Majesty King Michael I of Romania at the Peles Castle. The MPs conveyed condolences to the Royal Family and signed in the Book of Condolence.
