Moldovan PM, European Council President analyze possibilities to strengthen Moldova-EU political dialogue

Chisinau, 4 May /MOLDPRES/ - The latest developments in the Moldova-EU dialogue and Moldova’s domestic policy and foreign policy priorities have been the main subjects of discussion at a meeting between Prime Minister Pavel Filip and European Council President Donald Tusk, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.     

The prime minister reconfirmed the importance of the dialogue with EU, noting that the implementation of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement was unfolding well. More provisions have been already carried out, the others are under implementation and the results of the last two years are quite encouraging for Moldova’s European way.   

“The authorities are determined to take every effort to prove to the citizens the benefits of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement and make the European road irreversible,” Pavel Filip said. At the same time, maximum of vigilance is needed to any possible attempt of influencing and involvement from abroad and the government deems as a priority the taking all measures to have an electoral process worthy of a country with European aspirations, the PM noted.   

Pavel Filip said that the authorities would ensure the correctness of the parliamentary polls, so that the latter take place according to the democratic standards, be free and affair. Decision-makers will make efforts to this end, in order to ensure the meeting of the standards of OSCE and Council of Europe. The prime minister also referred to the local elections in Chisinau and Balti, due on 20 May, which represents an important exercise.  

The PM reiterated the importance to further consolidate the cooperation within the Eastern Partnership, which will mark ten years of work in 2019. The premises of an as concrete as possible cooperation are very good and the regional projects will allow an as direct as possible effect in the daily life of the citizens.  

The officials exchanged opinions also on the Transnistrian settlement. The prime minister touched upon the progress made in the last period on this dimension, with the recent one being the access of the vehicles from the Transnistrian region to the international road traffic. “This is a complex document, according to the technical and legal implications it produces, yet ambitious from the viewpoint of enhancement of the trust between the two banks of Dniester and convening a new round of five-plus-two talks,” Pavel Filip said.   

European Council President Donald Tusk welcomed the progress made by the authorities in the Transnistrian problem settlement and reconfirmed the support for its peaceful settlement, with the observance of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.  

The European official encouraged the authorities to continue the reforms’ agenda to strengthen Moldova’s European profile.
