Canada backs Moldovan pro-European cabinet's efforts to strengthen democratic institutions

Chisinau, 13 June /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has managed to resist pressures and continue the course of democratic development, despite multiple challenges to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, it was exposed to during 27 years. The conclusion belongs to members of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of Canada’s House of Commons, made after a meeting with Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi, on a 10-13 June working visit to Canada, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s press service has reported.     

During the dialogue with the Canadian lawmakers, Minister Ulianovschi referred to the situation in Moldova, reforms promoted by the government, progress made in the implementation of the commitments taken within the Association Agreement with EU, as well as the present challenges to the national security. 

”These challenges have mostly a regional character, which dictates the strengthening of efforts of states from the region to more efficiently respond to the dangers they are exposed to,” the Moldovan diplomacy head said. In the context, Minister Ulianovschi conveyed a message of appreciation on behalf of the Moldovan government to the Ottawa authorities for Canada’s firm and consistent support for the Transnistrian conflict settlement and ensuring Moldova’s territorial integrity.  

In speeches made on the information unveiled by Minister Tudor Ulianovschi, the Commission members appreciated Moldova’s commitment to keep the course of democratic and economic reforms. They welcomed the progress made in the process of aligning with the western norms and standards.

At the same time, the Canadian MPs appreciated the signing of the agreement on the mutual promotion and protection of investments and a joint declaration on progressive and inclusive trade and investments. The lawmakers stressed Canada’s openness for backing the efforts of the Moldovan pro-European government for strengthening the democratic institutions of Moldova and ensuring the uninterrupted course of reforms.
