Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ – The draft resolution on "The complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova", approved by the UN, is a result of ours, of all those who hold on the independence and integrity of the country and a signal of trust and solidarity from the international community. The statement was made today by Prime Minister Pavel Filip in a press briefing.

According to Filip, the approval of this resolution does not necessarily mean immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. "But for us it is important that this topic, which has disappeared since 2003 on agenda of OSCE ministerial meetings, is again on the table of the international community. The approved resolution ensures that this issue will remain on agenda of UN General Assembly until last Russian soldier leaves the territory of Moldova," declared head of Executive.

The PM thanked the team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEIE), Moldovan Mission in New York for promoting this important topic for moldova on UN agenda and expressed gratitude to states which supported resolution.

He said that the UN – approved document, along with other progress onto Transnistrian dimension, round up achievements in strengthening and protecting Moldova's integrity in 2018. "Besides roads, housing, pensions and wages, our citizens need to feel proud of their country, and Moldova deserves to be treated with respect," said Filip.

The Head of Executive reiterated that Moldova has insisted upon unconditional and complete withdrawal of Russian Troops Group (GOTR) from territory of Moldova. "The UN – approved draft resolution does not cover Russian military contingent of peacekeeping forces on the Dniester, deployed in accordance with provisions of Moldovan – Russian ceasefire agreement of 1992. But sometimes GOTR is deliberately confused with contingent of Russian peacekeepers to create confusion and mislead public opinion."

Filip noted that military peacekeeping mission should be replaced by a civilian international mission, as it has exhausted its mandate.

On 22 June, in New York, UN General Assembly approved the draft resolution on "The complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova". The document was supported by 64 states.
