Chisinau, 13 July /MOLDPRES/ - The heavy rainfall of the last period have prompted an extension of the campaign of harvesting cereals. Data from areas shows that, since the beginning of the harvesting campaign, more than 44 per cent of the overall area of wheat has been harvested in Moldova, which represents about 320,000 ha and over 90 per cent of the area of 44,000 hectares of winter barley, sources from the Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM) have reported.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, a senior consultant at MADRM, Marin Grama, informed that the average harvest of wheat on Moldova was about 3.1 tons per one hectare and the one of barley - 3 tons/ha.

„We have the best situation in the northern region: wheat and barley – by 3.4 tons/ha. Smaller harvests are recorded in central Moldova districts: wheat – 2.6 tons/ha and barley – 2.5 tons/ha. Thus, the average harvest on Moldova stands at: 3.1 tons/ha for wheat, by 0.1 tons/ha less than the average harvest for the last five years; barley – 3 tons/ha, by 0.3 tons/ha more against the average harvest of the last five years,” Marin Grama said, referring to data provided by district departments for agriculture and nourishment.

Grama also said that the harvesting of spring barley had started one week ago in ten districts of Moldova, with about 2.6 thousands of hectares out of 35,000 cultivated ones harvested.

The MADRM consultant noted that the harvesting of dry peas and autumn rape was underway all over the country. “The dry peas were harvested on an area of 11,000 hectares out of 20,000 ha cultivated. The average harvest is 1.5 tons/ha, by 0.6 tons/ha less than the average harvest in the last five years,” Marin Grama said.

According to the Agriculture Ministry’s representative, the autumn rape was harvested on an area of 29,000 ha (out of 44,000 ha cultivated). The average harvest on Moldova is 2.1 tons/ha, - equivalent to the indexes recorded in the last five years.

The campaign of harvesting the first group cereals started in most settlements of Moldova in late last June. Because of the precipitation, the harvesting began by one week later in 11 districts. Specialists said that the heavy rains of the last period brought more risks to the campaign of harvesting cereals and can cause material damages to farmers.
