Increase in areas, harvest of nut crops registered in Moldova in last years

Chisinau, 19 July /MOLDPRES/ - An increase of the areas and harvest of nut crops has been recorded in Moldova in the last years. More exactly, we have over 26,000 hectares of nut crops. Among these crops, nut trees are cultivated on over 450 ha, with a harvest of about 300 tons. The information was unveiled by a representative of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry, Vasile Sarban, at a national conference on advantages and technology of cultivation of   nut tree in Moldova.      

According to the deputy president of Moldova’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), Mihai Bilba, the goal of the event is to inform producers about advantages and technology of cultivation of nut trees, varieties recommended for the conditions from Moldova, as well as about the costs and opportunities for the farmers who rule to start this business.   .

Vasile Sarban said that the Agriculture Ministry would back the producers of nuts, given that this crop has a big potential of extending in Moldova.

The director general of the Moldovan-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cristina Samson, said that applications on behalf of international companies on import of nuts from Moldova had been registered in the previous tears. “Thus, we see a potential of this crop in Moldova; yet, it is necessary to create cooperatives or associations to cope with the requirements,” Cristina Samson added.  

An international expert in the technology of cultivating nuts, owner of a nursery in Italy Negro Carlo presented the advantages Moldova has and varieties which can be bred here. At the same time, the expert said that Moldova can produce significant quantities of nuts.  

According to CCI, over 150 entrepreneurs from all over Moldova participated in the event.
