Meeting of Open Coordination Committee held in Chisinau

Chisinau, 8 August /MOLDPRES/- A meeting of the Open Coordination Committee was held in Chisinau, attended by teachers and NGO representatives from the right and left banks of the Nistru River.

Within the meeting, UN Women staff Elena Ratoi delivered a presentation intended to provide participants the statistics related to: the share of women in politics, the number of cases of violence, leadership opportunities and restrictions for women in Moldova and other countries. A part of the presentation took place in an interactive form, the speaker asked for the participants’ opinions, there were debates and discussions on women's rights and their participation in the country’s public life. 

Svetlana Rusu, representative of the Ombudsman’s Office in the Republic of Moldova, delivered a presentation “Extra-judicial mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights”. The participants were informed about with the main tasks of the Ombudsman’s Office, the normative framework of its activities, the goals and tasks, which cases could be addressed and what kind of complaints the Office receives. The mission of the Ombudsman’s Office is to monitor the respect of human rights and freedoms in Moldova and making recommendations for the elimination of violations; ensuring the monitoring of human rights and freedoms and the implementation by central and local public authorities, at national level, of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; providing protection and assistance to the child at request, without asking for the consent of the parents or legal representatives; have the right to act on its own to help a child in difficulty or in a situation of risk without requesting the consent of the parents or legal representatives.

Later, the NGOs winners of the sub-grant competition were presented.

The event was organized by the Institute for Democracy (Gagauzia) in cooperation with the Association of Bulgarian Culture "Rodolubets" (located in the village of Parkani, left bank of the Nistru River) and the Center for Protection and Promotion of the Young Women’s Rights (Chisinau).

Project director Andrei Borsevskii described the plan of further actions and introduced Mr. Fabien Schaeffer, representative of the EU Delegation in the Republic of Moldova.

Each participant presented a description of their project and its further goals and objectives, as well as participants asked questions to the representative of the EU Delegation and expressed their gratitude.

The event was funded by the European Union in the framework of the Confidence-Building Measures Programme and co-financed by the Government of Sweden and UN Women in the framework of the Cooperation Agreement for the implementation of the project with UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women).
