Chisinau, 14 September /MOLDPRES/ – The National Library of Moldova (BNM) has opened today a Resource Center for a diverse group of people – pupils, students, etc., which learn English as well as English teachers.

The English Language Centre was inaugurated following the signing of a tripartite cooperation agreement signed on the same day between the UK Council of Ukraine, the Metropolitan Association of Applied Training (META) and BNM.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of Great Britain to Moldova, Lucy Joyce, head of the Cabinet of Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Gheorghe Postica, librarians, teachers, pupils and students.

Interviewed by agency, Director of BNM, Elena Pintilei, said that the Centre would be equipped with printed and digital resources, which allow efficient operation and organisation of a wide range of activities for pupils, students, teachers, meant to promote English for a variety of audiences. There will also be held various workshops and events dedicated to the professional development of English teachers, as well as discussion clubs with native speakers, book clubs, watching of films in English, etc. for pupils and students.

"Today libraries are open spaces for the community. This trend is also a priority for BNM. In terms of cooperation, we extend our partnerships in particular with the public organisations that are part of this community. We hope that with the opening of the Resource Centre, we will increase the number of library and borrow visits and become more familiar with the educational environment, and become a communication space for English speakers," said Elena Pintilei.

At his turn, head of the Cabinet of Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Professor Gheorghe Postica, said that education and culture are the basic elements of modern society. "It is impossible to promote culture and education without communication. And English is the language of modern civilization," said Gheorghe Postica. In this context, director of META Public Association, Galina Guzun, said that the Centre "will help raise education at a high level."

On the first day, the Centre held two workshops for English teachers as well as for pupils and students.
