Resolution in support of Moldova registered in US Senate

Chisinau, 19 September /MOLDPRES/- A resolution in support of the Republic of Moldova was registered in the United States Senate. The document confirms the Senate's position on strengthening USA-Moldova relations and reaffirms support for the territorial integrity of the country, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
On a visit to Washington, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu asked at the yesterday’s meeting with Senator Ron Johnson for support in promoting the document.
The resolution reaffirms the position of the United States in support of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country, as well as the sovereign right of the country to make partnerships without external pressure, including the right to association with the EU or regional organizations.
The document backs the strategic dialogue between the United States and the Republic of Moldova to strengthen bilateral relations, democracy, economy and ongoing security reforms.
The draft Senate resolution encourages the Secretary of State and USAID to focus support on supporting judicial reforms, promoting open, transparent and democratic governance, support for media and economic growth and energy security. The Senate encourages the Moldovan government to continue implementing crucial reforms to increase capacity and confidence in democratic institutions, justice, fight against corruption and civil society activity. Also, the government is called upon to encourage the involvement of civil society in fighting corruption.
The Senate's resolution reaffirms the importance of free, fair and transparent elections and backs the efforts to combat disinformation campaigns in Eastern Europe.
The document also calls on the Russian Federation to fulfill its international obligations to withdraw troops and ammunition from Moldova. Moscow is also required to refrain from economic threats and pressure on Moldova. The Russian Federation is called upon to stop any action supporting separatist movements in Moldova.
The US Senate urges all parties involved in settling the Transnistrian conflict to refrain from unilateral action that would undermine efforts to identify a peaceful solution to the Transnistrian conflict that would ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.
In February, a resolution was also passed in the United States Congress to support the Republic of Moldova.
