Well-known Moldovan historian marks 60th birthday anniversary

Chisinau, 8 December /MOLDPRES/ - A former Moldovan MP, director of the State Archive Service of Moldova, historian Ion Varta turned 60 today.   

Ion Varta was born in the Larga village, northern Briceni district. In 1982, Varta graduated from the History Faculty of the Moldovan State University (USM) and in 1986-1989, he studied at the Institute for Slavistics and Balkanistics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1990, Ion Varta defended his thesis of doctor of historical sciences with the subject, France and the Union of Romanian Principalities (1855-1859).  

In 1982-1986, Ion Varta worked as lecturer at the Department of Universal History of the Chisinau-based Ion Creanga Pedagogical Institute and during 1998-1999 – head of the Department of Universal History and International Relations at the Free International University of Moldova and in 1999-2005 – scientific researcher, coordinator and head of the Department of Modern History at the History Institute of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM).   

Starting from 2005 till 2009, Varta was lawmakers in Moldova’s parliament on the lists of the Christian Democratic People’s Party and since 2012 so far, he has been director of the State Archive Service of Moldova.

He made hundreds of essays at scientific events (conferences, symposiums, seminars, roundtables, sessions of national and international essays). Also, Varta signed over 160 scientific articles, as well as four monographs, eight textbooks for gymnasiums and lyceums, collections of documents, etc.  

Ion Varta was member of the commission for studying and assessing the Communist totalitarian regime from Moldova. In 2000, he was awarded the prize Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi of the Romanian Academy.
