Chisinau, 24 April /MOLDPRES/ – The Government has approved at its today meeting the decision on signing of the Agreement between the Government of Moldova and the Government of Tajikistan on visa – free travel of the citizens.

According to the MAEIE’s public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service, the citizens of Moldova and Tajikistan, at present, travel without visas. This regime is governed by the provisions of the Visa-Free Agreement of the Community of Independent States (CIS), concluded on 09 October 1992 in Bishkek. However, lately, "there has been a deviation of the CIS states from the provisions of this Multilateral Agreement by signing bilateral agreements that regulate visa-free reciprocal travel."

So far, Moldova has concluded bilateral agreements on mutual travel with the CIS member states such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan, and Armenia.

The negotiations on the Intergovernmental Agreement on mutual trips of citizens with Tajikistan were initiated in October 2012. Following the major changes made by Moldova in national legislation, the text of the previously submitted project was replaced by a new project. Thus, the updated draft of the Agreement also includes provisions in national law on the possibility of staying in the country for 90 days within 180 days.

The project does not limit the freedom of travel from one state to another. The Agreement shall specify the documents to be used for movement from one State to another, actions to be taken in case of loss or theft of documents, exchange of specimens of identity documents, suspension of the application of Agreement, its entry into force and denunciation.

The visa – free regime is the one of relations between countries where their citizens do not need visas to visit. The visa – free regime can be established both unilaterally (for instance, Moldova has established a visa – free regime for the citizens of the United States of America (USA), Canada, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK of GB&NI), etc.) and reciprocally (throughout bilateral or multilateral agreements). Also, it is possible to restrict passport types (biometric or regular) and stay.

The Moldovan citizens can enter without visas in 75 states worldwide.
