Moldova marks European day of commemoration of victims of fascism, communism on 23 August

Chisinau, 14 August /MOLDPRES/ – Moldova joins the decision of the European Parliament (EP) and it will mark the European day of commemoration of victims of fascism and communism on 23 August, has announced Prime Minister, Maia Sandu, at the Government meeting.

"In accordance with the decision of EP, which has been implemented since 2009, the Government has declared 23 August 2019 as the Day of commemoration of victims of all totalitarian regimes. Otherwise, it is called Commemoration Day for the victims of Nazism and Stalinism. We invite everyone, including the TVs, to join us in this process, holding a minute of recess at 20:00 hours in prime time,” said Maia Sandu. She has added that there will be announced more details later.

On 29 September 2008, EP declared 23 August the European day of commemoration of victims of fascism and communism.

The establishment of the day of August 23 as the day of commemoration of victims of totalitarism was supported also by the Vilnius Declaration of 2009 of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

On 23 August 1939, it was signed the Ribbentrop – Molotov Pact, in which the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany agreed to divide eastern Europe between them.
