Chisinau, 8 November /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Maia Sandu presented a draft on the amendment of the Law on the Prosecutor General’s Office, in the parliament’s plenum today. Immediately after the presentation, the faction of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) informed that it had filed a motion of censure against the cabinet of ministers.

In her speech, Maia Sandu said that the justice reform was not her whim, but represented the promised made to the people. “I cannot sit with my hands folded and watch how the state’s institutions find a new master each. We tried to be correct, including so far, and where have we got? They intervened each time. Ingenious ways, tricks and schemes were found. Yes, we have made certain compromises. We did them in order to manage to achieve the main goal – an independent Prosecutor General’s Office, a true justice. The fight for the prosecutor general is the last redoubt. This is the red line. In this pre-selection, I cannot allow any deviation – the role of the prosecutor general is too important for the justice system and the ill-intentioned interferences can cost all of us – the citizens of Moldova – too much,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The PM informed that she was taking political responsibility for the process of identifying of candidates for the office of prosecutor general. “I will personally identify and verify honest, courageous and good-intentioned people and I will put them forward to the Superior Council of Prosecutors. I will be responsible before people; therefore, I am the most interested for the next prosecutor to be subordinated only to the law and the Constitution and not to a master. My commitment is that we have a free prosecutor,” Sandu noted.

Immediately after the prime minister had ended her discourse, PSRM MP Vasile Bolea said that his formation had registered a motion of censure against the cabinet of ministers.

Under the legislation, during three days, the motion is considered and then it is to be discussed in parliament.

The dissensions appeared on the Moldovan political stage, after Justice Minister Olesea Stamate earlier this week had cancelled the results of the contest for the office of prosecutor general. On 6 November, the government approved, through procedure of taking responsibility, new rules of selection of the prosecutor general.
