Chisinau, 13 December /MOLDPRES/- The Superior Council of Magistracy / CSM / admitted today the requests for resignation of judges of the Supreme Court of Justice Ion Druță and Oleg Sternioală. Both magistrates are criminally prosecuted for illicit enrichment and money laundering.

In the resignation applications, the two judges invoked Article 26 of the Law on the status of judge, which states "resignation of judge". They submitted their applications to the parliament, after several times declaring that they do not recognize the legitimacy of the current panel of CSM.

Also, CSM members appointed 31 judges. They took the oath and are to take up their positions in the district courts this month. Nine items were included on the agenda of today's CSM meeting, including the transfer of judges from one court to another.

Magistrate Oleg Sternioală was detained on 4 November this year. He is investigated for money laundering in especially large amounts. Judge Ion Druță was deprived of immunity on 24 September 2019, subsequently being investigated on the same grounds.

On 27 September, over 200 magistrates convened in the General Assembly of Judges and decided to revoke the CSM panel. 164 out of 202 magistrates voted for the dismissal of the CSM interim president, Dorel Musteață. Victor Micu was dismissed by 118 votes, Anatolie Galben - 162 votes, Luiza Gafton, Petru Moraru and Nina Cernat - 167 votes and alternate member Anatolie Pahapol was dismissed by 155 votes.
