Chisinau, 7 May /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker today participated in a videoconference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory, organized at an initiative by Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia’s Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko. Attending the event were the leaders or representatives of the legislative bodies from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and other states, including European ones, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
In her greeting speech to the participants, Valentina Matviyenko said that the goal of the event was to consecrate once again the lessons of the Victory and its significance for the present times and the future.
Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii said that the Victory Day was a historical event uniting everybody. More than 300,000 fellow countrymen of Moldova had fought in the soviet army in the Great Patriotic War and unfortunately, over 50,000 Moldovans died on battlefields. ”Therefore, with good reason, our people consider that this war was a Great Patriotic War,’’ the speaker said.
The speaker informed the participants in the videoconference about President Igor Dodon’s decision to award the highest distinction of the state, Order of the Republic, to all veterans alive, as well as a jubilee medal dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory. Greceanii also said that works on reconstruction of the Eternitate (Eternity) Memorial Complex had been carried out this year.
The speaker voiced regret that, in 2020, no far-reaching events would be held in Moldova and most other states on 9 May. At the same time, the March of the Immortal Regiment and other activities will be held on 24 August, the day of Moldova’s liberation from the fascist occupation.
In the end, the parliament speaker stressed that the memory of the Great Patriotic War and the Great Victory was the basis of our common identity and unity. ‘’It is important to coordinate the efforts at the inter-parliamentary level, in order to keep alive the people’s memory about the heroism of those who brought us the Victory,’’ Zinaida Greceanii added.
