EU to provide assistance financial assistance for renovating centres of two Moldovan cities

Chisinau, 4 June /MOLDPRES/ - The centres of the Cahul and Ungheni municipalities will be renovated with European Union’s financial assistance. The local residents are part of the change and they come up with ideas on transforming the centres of these two cities. Or the population’s recommendations will be taken into account in this modernization process – activity due to be started this year with the EU’s financial assistance within the EU4Moldova: Key Regions programme, financed by the European Union and implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Moldova.   

„Through this initiative, we encourage people from Cahul and Ungheni to be active and publicly set forth ideas of developing their communities. This is an important element in the European Union’s approach of backing the key regions. We hope that this kind of activities will bring the change wished by the communities and they will develop due to people’s ideas and involvement,’’ Head of the European Union Delegation in Moldova Peter Michalko said.

The residents of the Cahul and Ungheni cities, as well as the people from other regions are invited to vote, on the period 4-15 June, ideas of renovating the settlements’ centres, by accessing the webpages www.eu4cahul.md (for Cahul) and www.eu4ungheni.md (for Ungheni). Ten ideas are put to vote for each settlement, which got the biggest evaluation score of the jury within the context, EU for Cahul/Ungheni. Your Idea for a European Municipality. The contest was held on the period January-March, with more than 300 ideas on modernizing these cities registered.      

„The EU4Ungheni programme has created a friendly framework of discussions with citizens on the modernization of the cultural, historical and administrative centre of the Ungheni municipality. We are happy with the fact that the Ungheni residents know the city’s problems and come up with realistic and, at the same time, innovative solutions. Together, we are set to change the look of the city’s centre and I am sure that we will succeed only together,’’ the Ungheni city mayor, Alexandru Ambros, said.  

„The Cahul municipality’s centre needs transformation and improvement of its look for the citizens’ comfort. The proposals and ideas sent by Cahul residents within the contest are necessary, coincide with the priorities established by the city hall and thanks to the EU’s support, our contributions and citizens’ involvement, they will be gradually successfully implemented,’’ the Cahul city mayor, Nicolae Dandis, said.   

The contest, EU for Cahul/Ungheni. Your Idea for a European Municipality, is part of a complex initiative of consulting and people’s participation in processes of development of regions, carried out by the EU4Moldova: Key Regions programme.   

The support for the Ungheni and Cahul municipalities is provided within the second initiative within the programme EU4Moldova: Key Regions. The initiative is carried out on the period 2019-2025 and is implemented by the UNDP, UNICEF, with the strategic guidance of the European Union Delegation in Moldova.
