Moldova marks 29 years of Independence

Chisinau, 27 August /MOLDPRES/- Moldova marks today the 29th anniversary of the proclamation of Independence, voted by the Parliament on 27 August 1991. The event is marked in a limited format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Chisinau, the holiday traditionally began with laying flowers.

Thus, this morning President Igor Dodon, Speaker Zinaida Greceanii and Prime Minister Ion Chicu laid flowers at Maica Indurerata memorial complex. Attending the event were MPs, cabinet members and diplomats.

Later, the officials laid flowers at Stefan cel Mare monument.

"This year has been difficult for our society, but we have managed to resist, economically and morally. Our state has demonstrated its steadfastness, and our people have shown remarkable deeds of humanity, understanding and professionalism. Together, we will overcome the hard times and continue to develop our country as we wish and as it deserves. Only together will we build an integral, peaceful and prosperous Moldova ", he said.

The Prime Minister congratulated the citizens on the 29th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova. He noted “Independence Day is perfect opportunity to give our children a lesson in history and patriotism. It is an opportunity to raise awareness among the young generation about the sacrifices of our predecessors in order to make our country a better one. Today we mark Independence Day differently. The reason is obvious - humanity is facing an unprecedented crisis generated by the new coronavirus.

We are grateful to doctors, police and all people who fight against this virus.

In order to be able to face this challenge and many other trials and crises, it is necessary to be united.”

Congratulatory messages were sent to the leadership of our country by several heads of state, including presidents of the Russian Federation, Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, the People's Republic of China etc.

The Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova was adopted by Parliament on 27 August 1991.
