Chisinau, 4 November /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova and the United States will have a bilateral agreement on air transport of the Open Skies type for the first time ever. A document to this effect between the governments of Moldova and USA was initialed on 3 November.
The agreement establishes the framework of cooperation in the air transport sector between the two states. The document shows the principles of regulation of the work of the bilateral air services, norms on the safety and security of passengers, taxes and certificates on navigability and competence.
„The entrance into force of the Open Skies Agreement will create premises for the launch of direct flights from Chisinau to destinations from the United States, will contribute to the opening of the market of air services from Moldova and diversification of destinations from the Chisinau International Airport. On the other hand, the agreement will have a positive impact in the strengthening of the diplomatic and economic relations, facilitation of the investment cooperation between Moldova and the United States. Also, the creation of an open aviation area with the USA will bring big economic benefits to Moldova through the increase in the passengers’ traffic, as well as through the enhancement of competition on the native aviation market,’’ the Economics and Infrastructure Ministry (MEI) said.
Based on the agreement initialed, the Moldovan cargo air companies will already be able to make air flights to the USA. The process of consideration and initialing of the agreement was sped up by Economics and Infrastructure Minister Sergiu Railean after air operators in last April had asked for support to the needed authorizations for making flights to the United States.
The starting of negotiations on the Agreement, proposed by the American side, was instructed under a cabinet decision from 2018. Following an exchange of correspondence between the sides, on 2 November 2020, MEI received from the U.S. Embassy the text of the agreement initialed, in order to be considered by the Moldovan side.
