Well-known Romanian actress would have turned 85

Chisinau, 21 December /MOLDPRES/ - A well-known Romanian theatre and movie actress, Stela Popescu,  called symbol actress of the Constantin Tanase Revue Theatre, who was born in Moldova, would have turned 85 today.  

Stela Popescu was born in a family of teachers in the Slobozia Hodorogea village, presently Chiperceni village, central Orhei district, Bessarabia, on 21 December 1935. After Bessarabia’s invasion by the Russian army in 1940, her father was deported to Siberia, while Stela and her mother took refuge to Romania. In 1956, she was admitted to the Bucharest-based Institute of Theatrical Arts and  Cinematography. Following the faculty’s graduation, Popescu was sent to the Brasov Theatre, where she got to play in more than 400 performances per year.  

Stela Popescu made a good career in the television as well. She played in theatre performances and entertainment programmes and managed to convey something of the satirical and objector spirit of the Revue Theatre through texts of valuable writers.   

In 2004, Stela Popescu was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in grade of Commander, D category, Play Art, ‘’as a token of appreciation of the entire activity for the self-denial and interpretative talent put in the service of the theatrical art and play’’ and in 2015 – the Order Star of Romania, in the grade of Knight. On 10 September 2013, King Michael I of Romania awarded Stela Popescu, through her daughter, Princess Margareta, the decoration Nihil Sine Deo. In 2016, she was awarded the honorific title of People’s Artist of Moldova. On 1 June 2017, Popescu received the diploma of Honorary Citizen of the Brasov city. Actress Stela Popescu died on 23 November 2017 and was buried at the Cernica Monastery, nearby his husband Puiu Maximilian.
