Most public buildings from 3 Moldovan districts inaccessible for people with reduced mobility

Chisinau, 23 December /MOLDPRES/ - Only one public building (Calarasi district) is accessible; another 112 are partially accessible and the rest of 356 buildings are inaccessible for people with reduced mobility. This is data of a study  on the analysis of the conditions of accessibility of public buildings from the districts of Falesti, Calarasi and Cahul, carried out within a project implemented by the Alliance of Organizations for People with Disabilities (AOPD) and financed by the European Union and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.   

According to the profile of the audited buildings, 33 education institutions are partially accessible and 96 are inaccessible; 19 medical institutions are partially accessible and 47 are inaccessible; 17 cultural institutions are partially accessible and 84 are inaccessible; 25 state institutions are partially accessible and 78 are inaccessible; 17 state enterprises are partially accessible and 50 are inaccessible; an economic enterprise is partially accessible and one is inaccessible; a public association is accessible (Calarasi district).   

No evaluation of the accessibility of public buildings and of district budgets has been earlier carried out in Moldova, in order to establish the initial values of the accessibility indicators. The present study is meant to complete the civil society’s efforts and establish the initial indicators for a sample of 469 public buildings from the Falesti, Calarasi and Cahul. At the same time, the study proves the need to use the financial resources locally through tackling the principle of inclusion and participation, so that all citizens have equal rights.    

The project titled, Accessibility – a precondition for ensuring all rights of people with disabilities, is implemented by AOPD within the grants programme, Development of civil society locally in Moldova, financed by the European Union and Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The project is implemented by the Foreign Policy Association, ADEPT Association, Expert-Grup and Public Association Pro-Europe European Centre from Comrat. The project’s goal is to enhance the social inclusion of people with disabilities by promoting the ensuring of conditions of accessibility nationally and locally in Moldova.
