Phenomenon of aging teachers registered in Moldova

Chisinau, 29 December /MOLDPRES/- More than a quarter of teachers who teach in primary and secondary education are between 50-59 years old.

The National Statistics Bureau presented data on the activity of primary and secondary education institutions in early 2020/21 academic year. In 2020/21 academic year, the educational process in primary and secondary education institutions is provided by 26.9 thousand teachers, down by 1.8% than in the previous academic year. The management staff is 3.5 thousand people, and the teaching staff ̶ 23.4 thousand people. 

Distribution of teachers by age groups shows that an important share is held by teachers aged 50-59 (26.7%), registering an increase of 0.7 percentage points compared to the 2019/20 academic year, while the share of young teachers under the age of 30 decreased by 0.6 percentage points, amounting to 9.2%. Out of 1,241 primary and secondary education institutions, 74.5% operate in rural areas.
